Obstructive sleep apnea, otherwise known as OSA, is a condition in which breathing patterns and oxygenation are disrupted during sleep. This condition can range between mild to severe. Sleep studies are performed to diagnose and treat sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea. If left undiagnosed, OSA can increase the risk of developing other health conditions such as heart attack, stroke, irregular heart rhythms, elevated blood pressure, and heart disease.

Symptoms can include:

  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Morning headaches
  • Memory impairment
  • Snoring
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Mood swings

Sleep studies do require an order from a physician. Here at RHSHC we offer two different kinds of sleep tests: Apnea links/home sleep tests and in-lab sleep studies.

Home Sleep Tests

These tests are often performed first when being evaluated for OSA. A physician may order a home sleep test to evaluate oxygen levels and hypopneas with the use of a medical device worn at the comfort of your own home during the night while you sleep. Your provider will determine next steps pending the results of this test.

In-lab Sleep Study

Patients spend the night here at RHSHC for an in-lab sleep study where they will be hooked up to various monitors which record brain activity, oxygen levels, and breathing patterns while you sleep.  A CPAP device may be utilized during this test to help regulate your breathing patterns if appropriate. Sleep aides or medications may be utilized during in-lab sleep studies pending patient request and physician orders.
